I was talking to some friends about ice cream shops we went to when we were growing up. I mentioned that I really liked one shop in particular because they had Monkey Tails and I was met with blank stares. Monkey Tails? Nobody else had heard of them which was just shocking to me!
If you haven’t heard of Monkey Tails, you’ve missed out. Monkey Tails are simply frozen bananas on a stick, dipped into melted chocolate and put back in the freezer until you’re ready to enjoy! Decades ago, when we’d buy one, it was simply dipped in plain dark chocolate, but if you’re making them yourself, you can go crazy!
The Money Tails we bought were made with whole bananas, and you can certainly do that, but I like to slice the bananas in thirds (unless they’re those cute mini bananas which would be great for this!), carefully insert a ‘candy stick‘, and freeze.
Then you melt the chocolate with a little coconut oil. You can use any chocolate you like, or use a mixture. I like to dip the bananas in dark or milk chocolate and then melt white chocolate to drizzle on top. Or use white chocolate with dark chocolate drizzled — but you can use dark, milk, white, ruby, or anything else you like!
Then you have the fun part. Once the bananas are dipped, before they are put back in the freezer, sprinkle or roll the bananas in your choice of toppings. You can use chopped, toasted nuts (peanuts and almonds are my favorite for this, but you can use any nuts you like), sprinkles, coconut, chopped chocolate/candy bars or anything you like! If I’m drizzling more chocolate onto the chocolate coated banana, I put the bananas in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up before drizzling.
As soon as the chocolate has firmed up, enjoy! You can also transfer these to an air-tight container and keep them in the freezer for a few days.
This is a great and easy treat to make with kids. Let them have fun decorating the bananas and enjoying a frozen summer treat!
Frozen Monkey Tails
Frozen bananas dipped in chocolate. An easy and delicious summer treat.
Ingredients
- 4-5 bananas
- 18 oz / 500 grams chocolate bars, chopped
- 5 tsp. coconut oil
- If you’re using different types of chocolate, use 1 tsp. of coconut oil for every 3 1/2 oz / 100 grams of chocolate.
- Chopped toasted nuts, coconut, sprinkles, candies, chopped chocolate bars, freeze-dried fruit, anything else you like!
Directions
- Peel and slice the bananas in thirds (or leave whole or cut in half if you’d like larger treats). Carefuly insert a stick into each banana. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid, 1-2 hours, depending on the size of your bananas.
- Place the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- One at a time, dip the bananas in the chocolate, making sure the whole banana piece is covered. Lift the banana out and let the excess chocolate drip off. Place on a parchment-lined tray and lightly sprinkle with nuts, coconut, sprinkles, candy or anything else you’re using. Continue until they’re all done and return immediately to the freezer. Leave for a few minutes before eating.
- If you’re not serving these up right away, transfer to an air-tight container for a few days.
